Therefore as citizens of this planet we all have to do our share in caring for it. Here are some of the proofs.
The pictures are combined from last year's mangrove planting and today's activity.
Concerted efforts to plant the mangrove would surely improve the environment and raise the hope of those affected. Regardless of status, position, race, gender and religion, we all can do our share and protect the environment.
Why the mangrove?
According to R.R. Lewis III (2001), "mangrove forests are coastal plant communities which are critical for many species of fish and wildlife, serve as coastal fish and shellfish nursery habitat".
Lewis, further explained that mangroves serve as coastal protection from hurricanes and typhoons, and riverine mangroves help remove pollutants before they enter adjacent coastal waters.
A clean-up is much needed and community education is also a great opportunity to inform the people on caring for the mangrove. In the course of the activity this morning, a lot of garbage were caught on the branches of the growing mangrove. candy and fast food wrappers were present and even human waste were in the area.
Wikipedia, informs that mangrove plantations in Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and India host several commercially important species of fish and other organisms. Despite restoration efforts, developers and others have removed over half of the world's mangroves in recent times.
Thanks to the students and to the NSTP class of Ms. Perez, the community of STI Cebu is able to pursue its efforts of protecting the environment.
Plant more mangroves!:)
